The bioinert nature of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) makes the PDMS surface unsuitable for cell-material interactions in tissue engineering. We report in this study the development of a novel PDMS-based micropatterned surface that can promote the differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs) and their proliferation. A micropatterned PDMS surface containing a 30 µm wavelength patterned gold surface was prepared using a combination of micropatterning and oxygen plasma etching and then used to culture neural progenitor cells for 7 days. We found that the micropatterned PDMS surface could promote the proliferation of neural progenitor cells and induced the cells to differentiate into neuron-like cells that expressed the neuron specific markers TUJ1, MAP2, and NF200.
